You are here: CURRICULUM  HOMEPAGE  > Art

At Green Dragon, art is an expression of feelings and emotions through painting, drawing, photography, sculpture & other media.

All art learning begins with exploring the art of an artist / craft-maker / designer / architect. Children are encouraged to look at and engage in critical discussion about their art work while also learning about the artist’s life and style. They are taught how to describe the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines (methods, techniques, materials etc), and making links to their own work. Children annotate other’s work and their own, and explore their own skills in their sketchbooks. Children create sketch books to record their observations, and use them to review and revisit ideas.

This exploration is a key part of our art curriculum and learning. Children need to experiment with their own style using a range of materials and techniques, spending some time ‘copying’ other artists to help develop their confidence and skills.

Children are allowed, encouraged and supported to use a range of materials creatively to design and make products. These are modelled for and with the children, with ‘mistakes’ being welcomed as learning opportunities

Children are shown how to use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination.

Children also learn how to use a range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space: introduction to perspective.
