    Year 6 Autumn 2 term Project 2023: Por el Amazonas

  • What’s the big idea?

    This Year 6 project helps children to understand the importance of rivers for society, economy and the environment. We will be exploring the Amazon and its impact on our world, as well as our world’s impact on the Amazon.

    It would be helpful to talk with your child about the knowledge organiser. As the project develops, they will be able to share more knowledge. Thank you!

  • What will we be learning?

    Geography

    We will be able to:

    • Identify the position and significance of the Greenwich Meridian
    • Identify different time zones on a world map
    • Identify the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn
    • Use eight points of a compass, and atlas symbols, to describe the positions of countries in South America and key features around Manaus

    We will know:

    • The features of a river
    • Why human and physical features change along the course of a river
    • Products that are exported from the Amazon, especially minerals
    • How the mass production of beef impacts the Amazon

    Science

    We will be able to:

    • Describe how living things are classified into broad groups, including micro-organisms, animals and plants
    • Give reasons for these groups, relating to specific characteristics

    Technology

    We will be able to review, design, create and review felt Advent calendars

    Art

    We will know:

    • About tribal face masks and jewellery from the Amazon

    We will be able to

    • Explore different brush strokes, and different colour & light effects
    • Create our own face masks based on tribal versions

    Computing - coding

  • Knowledge Organiser

    We use a knowledge organiser for every project in every year group. It is a helpful way for children and families to see the key knowledge that children will learn. This key knowledge helps the children ask more questions and then find out more information.

    It would be helpful to talk with your child about this knowledge organiser. As the project develops, they will be able to share more knowledge. Thank you!

  • Maths

    We will be able to:

    • developing greater confidence in addition and subtraction
    • learning how to multiply 4 digit by 2 digit
    • long and short division
  • English

    We will be:

    • using The Last Wild to improve all areas of the KS2 writing and reading curriculum
  • Year 6 Notes & Dates

    School Day:

    Please make sure that Year 6 children are in the Key Stage Two playground by 8.40am for an 8.45am start. The school day ends at 3.15pm.

    There is free breakfast available in the Studio (in the Key Stage Two playground) from 8am. Key Stage Two children (Years 3, 4, 5 and 6) can also attend Morning Sports for free every day from 8am.

    PE Kits:

    School PE uniform is black shorts (or tracksuit bottoms) with a white t-shirt and trainers. All children will come to school wearing PE kit on their PE days.

    Year 6 PE day is Wednesday. Wyvern One will swim on Tuesdays, Wyvern Two will swim on Fridays.

    Year 6 Home Learning

    • Daily reading – children will bring books home
    • TTRockstars website – children will bring logins home
    • Learning lines for Shakespeare
    • Tasks given out, as and when, based on classroom learning
    • Half-termly project activities sent out via email or a paper copy

    Trips

    We will be visiting the Natural History Museum on the 27th November. Details to follow after half term.

    Communication With Teachers:

    There are two main ways to talk with your child’s teacher.

    You can talk at the start or end of the day – remember that teachers have more time at the end of the day!
